A polyester is formed by condensation of terephthalic acid (C₈H₆O₄, M = 166 g·mol⁻¹) and ethylene glycol (C₂H₆O₂, M = 62 g·mol⁻¹). Each ester linkage results from the loss of one molecule of water (M = 18 g·mol⁻¹). The repeating unit of the polymer therefore consists of one molecule of each monomer after loss of water. A sample of this polymer has a number‑average molecular weight (Mₙ) of 45 000 g·mol⁻¹. (a) Determine the mass of the repeating unit. (b) Calculate the degree of polymerisation (the number of repeating units) in the polymer chain.

Answer Options

A. 210 g·mol⁻¹; 215
B. 224 g·mol⁻¹; 214
Correct Answer C. 210 g·mol⁻¹; 214
D. 208 g·mol⁻¹; 214
Correct Answer
C
Correct Option:
210 g·mol⁻¹; 214
