Question 7 WAEC_MODEL_QUESTIONS_VOL1 • 2020 • PHYSICS • essay

A rigid, sealed container of internal volume 2.0 L initially contains a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen gases at 27°C and a total pressure of 1.0 atm. The mole fraction of nitrogen in the mixture is 0.70. The container is then heated to 127°C, causing the pressure to increase. To bring the pressure back to 1.0 atm at the new temperature, a valve is opened and some gas is allowed to escape until the pressure stabilises at 1.0 atm while the temperature is maintained at 127°C.

Question Parts

( a )
Calculate the initial total number of moles of gas in the container.
( b )
Determine the total number of moles of gas remaining in the container after the valve is closed.
( c )
Find the mass of nitrogen that has escaped from the container (give your answer to two significant figures).
( d )
Explain why no work is done on or by the gas during the heating and venting processes.
