Question 10 WAEC_MODEL_QUESTIONS_VOL1 • 2018 • MATHEMATICS • essay

The time t (in seconds) taken for a certain chemical reaction to complete varies directly with the square of the concentration c (in mol L⁻¹) of a catalyst and inversely with the absolute temperature T (in K). When c = 0.20 mol L⁻¹ and T = 300 K the reaction requires 120 s.

Question Parts

( a )
Find the constant of variation k.
( b )
If the temperature is raised to 350 K and the catalyst concentration is increased to 0.25 mol L⁻¹, determine the new reaction time (to the nearest second).
( c )
The laboratory wishes the reaction to finish in under 90 s while keeping the temperature at 350 K. Determine the minimum catalyst concentration required, giving your answer to two decimal places.
( d )
Discuss qualitatively how the reaction time would change if both the temperature and the catalyst concentration were doubled from the values in part (b).
