Neco Model Questions Vol1 2023 Physics Question 37
Practice objective / multiple choice question 37 from the 2023 Neco Model Questions Vol1 Physics examination.
A U‑shaped tube open to the atmosphere contains water in its right arm and mercury in both arms. The water column in the right arm rises 0.50 m above the mercury surface in that arm. The densities are \(\rho_{\text{water}} = 1000\ \text{kg m}^{-3}\) and \(\rho_{\text{Hg}} = 13\,600\ \text{kg m}^{-3}\). (i) Find the difference \(h\) (in metres) between the mercury levels in the two arms. (ii) The left arm is sealed at the top by a piston of area \(A = 0.010\ \text{m}^{2}\). What magnitude of force must be applied to the piston to keep the water level unchanged? Take \(g = 9.8\ \text{m s}^{-2}\).
