Neco 2025 Physics Question 6
Practice objective / multiple choice question 6 from the 2025 Neco Physics examination.
An open-ended tube is connected to a sealed chamber containing air. The tube is filled with mercury so that the mercury column stands 0.30 m above the opening of the chamber. Atmospheric pressure is 101.3 kPa and the density of mercury is \(13\,600 \ \text{kg m}^{-3}\). (a) Determine the pressure of the air in the sealed chamber. (b) The temperature of the air in the chamber is then raised from \(20^{\circ}\text{C}\) to \(40^{\circ}\text{C}\) while the tube remains open to the atmosphere. Assuming the volume of the chamber does not change, calculate the new height of the mercury column.
