Question 7 NECO • 2024 • CHEMISTRY • essay

A weak monoprotic acid HA has a dissociation constant Ka = 1.8 \times 10^{-5}. An aqueous solution is prepared by dissolving 0.250 mol dm\^{-3} of HA in 50.0 cm\^{3} of water. The solution is titrated at 25 \degree C with a strong base, NaOH, of concentration 0.200 mol dm\^{-3}. Answer the following:

Question Parts

( a )
Write the net ionic equation for the reaction between HA and OH\^{-}.
( b )
Calculate the pH of the solution at the half‑equivalence point.
( c )
Determine the volume of NaOH required to raise the pH of the solution to 8.00. Give your answer in millilitres (mL) to three significant figures.
( d )
Identify the salt formed at the equivalence point and explain whether the solution after the equivalence point will be acidic, neutral or basic, giving a clear reason.
