Neco 2022 Chemistry Question 13
Practice objective / multiple choice question 13 from the 2022 Neco Chemistry examination.
Ethyl acetate (\(\text{CH}_3\text{COOCH}_2\text{CH}_3\)) hydrolyses in water according to\n\[\n\text{CH}_3\text{COOCH}_2\text{CH}_3 + \text{H}_2\text{O} \rightleftharpoons \text{CH}_3\text{COOH} + \text{CH}_3\text{CH}_2\text{OH}\n\]\nAt 25 °C the equilibrium constant \(K_c\) is \(1.0 \times 10^{-5}\). A 1.00 L solution is prepared by mixing 0.10 mol of ethyl acetate with 0.20 mol of water. (i) Calculate the equilibrium concentrations of all four species and the percentage of ethyl acetate that has hydrolysed. (ii) Using the acetic acid dissociation constant \(K_a = 1.8 \times 10^{-5}\), estimate the pH of the equilibrium solution (neglect the effect of ethanol).
