Neco 2021 Chemistry Question 6
Practice objective / multiple choice question 6 from the 2021 Neco Chemistry examination.
A 10.0 g sample of 2‑butanol (\( \mathrm{C}_4\mathrm{H}_{10}\mathrm{O} \)) is mixed with 8.0 g of 1‑butanol (\( \mathrm{C}_4\mathrm{H}_{10}\mathrm{O} \)). The mixture is treated with excess acidic potassium dichromate under conditions that oxidise only the secondary alcohol (2‑butanol) to butanone (\( \mathrm{C}_4\mathrm{H}_{8}\mathrm{O} \)). After the reaction the distillate contains 5.0 g of pure butanone. Assuming quantitative conversion of the reacted 2‑butanol, calculate the percentage of the original 2‑butanol that was actually oxidised.
