Neco 2020 Physics Question 18
Practice objective / multiple choice question 18 from the 2020 Neco Physics examination.
The nuclear fission reaction \(^{235}\!\text{U}+\,^{1}\!\text{n}\rightarrow\,^{141}\!\text{Ba}+\,^{92}\!\text{Kr}+3\,^{1}\!\text{n}+\text{energy}\) occurs with the following atomic masses: \(m(^{235}\!\text{U})=235.0439\,\text{u}\), \(m(^{1}\!\text{n})=1.008665\,\text{u}\), \(m(^{141}\!\text{Ba})=140.9144\,\text{u}\), \(m(^{92}\!\text{Kr})=91.9262\,\text{u}\). (The mass of a neutron is the same as above.)\nCalculate (i) the energy released per fission event in MeV, and (ii) the total energy obtainable from \(1\,\text{kg}\) of \(^{235}\!\text{U}\). Use \(1\,\text{u}=931.5\,\text{MeV}\) and \(N_A=6.022\times10^{23}\,\text{mol}^{-1}\).
