Neco 2019 Physics Question 28
Practice objective / multiple choice question 28 from the 2019 Neco Physics examination.
Water flows steadily through a horizontal pipe that narrows from a diameter of \(0.10\ \text{m}\) to \(0.05\ \text{m}\). In the wider section the speed of the water is \(2.0\ \text{m·s}^{-1}\) and the flow is incompressible and frictionless. (i) Find the pressure difference between the wide and narrow sections. (ii) If each section is \(2.5\ \text{m}\) long, the water viscosity is \(1.0\times10^{-3}\ \text{Pa·s}\), and the flow remains laminar, estimate the additional pressure drop due to viscous friction in each section using the Hagen-Poiseuille equation and give the total pressure drop across the pipe.
