Neco 2019 Agricultural Science Question 34
Practice objective / multiple choice question 34 from the 2019 Neco Agricultural Science examination.
A sealed silo stores 10 000 kg of maize at 15 % moisture (wet basis). The dry mass of the maize is therefore constant. At 25 °C the respiration of maize releases CO₂ at a rate of 0.02 % of its dry weight per day. The silo volume is 200 m³ and the initial CO₂ concentration is 0.04 % (by volume). (i) After 30 days, what is the CO₂ concentration (% by volume) in the silo? (ii) Does this exceed the safe limit of 0.5 % for workers? (iii) Each kilogram of CO₂ released also liberates 0.5 MJ of heat. Assuming the air in the silo has a density of 1.2 kg m⁻³ and a specific heat capacity of 1.005 kJ kg⁻¹ K⁻¹, estimate the temperature rise (°C) of the air after 30 days.
