Neco 2017 Chemistry Question 49
Practice objective / multiple choice question 49 from the 2017 Neco Chemistry examination.
Acetic acid (CH₃COOH) reacts with ethanol to give ethyl acetate and water. In a 1.0 L reactor the initial concentrations are 0.10 M acetic acid and 0.12 M ethanol. At 25 °C the equilibrium constant is \(K=4.0\) where \(K=\frac{[\text{ester}][\text{water}]}{[\text{acid}][\text{ethanol}]}\).\n(i) Determine the equilibrium concentrations of all species and the percentage yield of ethyl acetate.\n(ii) If the water formed is removed by azeotropic distillation so that its concentration becomes half of its equilibrium value, and the system is allowed to re‑equilibrate (same \(K\)), calculate the new equilibrium concentration of ethyl acetate and the new percentage yield.
