Question 26 IGCSE_MODEL_QUESTIONS_VOL1 • 2025 • BIOLOGY • objective

Two desert plants, A and B, have leaf surface areas of 50 cm\(^2\) and 30 cm\(^2\) respectively. The stomatal density of plant A is 200 stomata\,mm\(^{-2}\) and that of plant B is 350 stomata\,mm\(^{-2}\). Each open stomata can transpire \(0.02\) µL of water per hour when fully open. Under midday conditions, 60 % of the stomata of plant A and 80 % of those of plant B are open. Calculate the total water loss per hour for each plant and determine which plant loses less water per unit leaf area. Express the ratio of water loss per unit leaf area (plant A : plant B) in its simplest integer form.

Answer Options

A. Plant A loses less water per unit leaf area; the ratio (A : B) is 4 : 5.
B. Plant A loses less water per unit leaf area; the ratio (A : B) is 2 : 9.
Correct Answer C. Plant A loses less water per unit leaf area; the ratio (A : B) is 3 : 7.
D. Plant B loses less water per unit leaf area; the ratio (A : B) is 3 : 7.
Correct Answer
