Question 24 IGCSE_MODEL_QUESTIONS_VOL1 • 2024 • PHYSICS • objective

A rectangular loop of wire of resistance \(5.0\ \Omega\) has sides of length \(0.20\ \text{m}\) (parallel to the direction of motion) and \(0.10\ \text{m}\) (perpendicular to the direction of motion). The loop lies in a uniform magnetic field of magnitude \(0.80\ \text{T}\) that is directed into the page. Initially the loop is completely inside the field. The loop is pulled out of the field at a constant speed so that it leaves the field entirely in \(0.25\ \text{s}\). (a) Calculate the average magnitude of the induced emf in the loop during this interval. (b) Determine the average current flowing in the loop. (c) Find the magnitude of the magnetic force acting on the moving side of the loop while it is being pulled. (d) Compute the mechanical power required to pull the loop at constant speed. (e) Compare this mechanical power with the electrical power dissipated in the resistor and comment on any difference.

Answer Options

Correct Answer A. 0.064 V; 0.0128 A; 2.0×10⁻³ N; 1.6×10⁻³ W; mechanical power ≈1.6×10⁻³ W, electrical power ≈8.2×10⁻⁴ W
B. 0.080 V; 0.0160 A; 2.5×10⁻³ N; 2.0×10⁻³ W; mechanical power ≈2.0×10⁻³ W, electrical power ≈1.0×10⁻³ W
C. 0.050 V; 0.0100 A; 1.5×10⁻³ N; 1.0×10⁻³ W; mechanical power ≈1.0×10⁻³ W, electrical power ≈5.0×10⁻⁴ W
D. 0.072 V; 0.0144 A; 2.2×10⁻³ N; 1.8×10⁻³ W; mechanical power ≈1.8×10⁻³ W, electrical power ≈9.0×10⁻⁴ W
