Igcse Model Questions Vol1 2024 Chemistry Question 35
Practice objective / multiple choice question 35 from the 2024 Igcse Model Questions Vol1 Chemistry examination.
In acidic solution, potassium permanganate oxidises oxalic acid according to the overall reaction: \(2\,\text{MnO}_{4}^{-} + 5\,\text{C}_{2}\text{O}_{4}^{2-} + 16\,\text{H}^{+} \rightarrow 2\,\text{Mn}^{2+} + 10\,\text{CO}_{2} + 8\,\text{H}_{2}\text{O}\). A sample containing 0.250 g of oxalic acid (H₂C₂O₄, M = 90.03 g mol⁻¹) is dissolved in 100.0 mL of 0.10 M H₂SO₄. It is then titrated with 0.0200 M KMnO₄ solution. (a) Calculate the volume of KMnO₄ solution required to complete the reaction (to one decimal place). (b) After the titration, what is the pH of the solution (to two decimal places)? Assume the volume of KMnO₄ solution adds to the total volume.
