Practice objective / multiple choice question 28 from the 2017 Igcse Model Questions Vol1 Biology examination.
In two ecosystems the following data are recorded (per square metre per year):\n\nForest: solar energy received = 2000 MJ, 1 % of this is converted to chemical energy as gross primary production (GPP). Plant respiration uses 60 % of GPP. Herbivores consume 10 % of the net primary production (NPP).\n\nGrassland: solar energy received = 1800 MJ, 1.2 % conversion to GPP. Plant respiration uses 50 % of GPP. Herbivores consume 15 % of NPP.\n\nCalculate the trophic transfer efficiency from solar energy to herbivores for each ecosystem (expressed as a percentage to two decimal places) and state which ecosystem has the higher efficiency.
