In an acidic solution, potassium permanganate (KMnO4) is used to oxidise ferrous ions (Fe2+) to ferric ions (Fe3+). The relevant standard reduction potentials at 25 °C are: MnO4⁻ + 8H⁺ + 5e⁻ → Mn²⁺ + 4H₂O E° = +1.51 V Fe³⁺ + e⁻ → Fe²⁺ E° = +0.77 V (a) Write the balanced overall redox equation for the reaction. (b) Calculate the standard cell potential (E°cell) for the process. (c) State whether the reaction is spontaneous under standard conditions and justify your answer. (d) If 10.0 g of FeSO₄ (containing Fe²⁺) is to be completely oxidised in excess acid, calculate the mass of KMnO₄ required, assuming 100 % yield. (Molar masses: Fe = 55.85 g mol⁻¹, MnO₄⁻ = 118.94 g mol⁻¹).
