At sea level the arterial partial pressure of oxygen (\(P_{O_2}\)) is approximately 21 kPa. When a person ascends to a high altitude the ambient \(P_{O_2}\) falls by 30 %. Assuming that arterial oxygen saturation (\(S_{aO_2}\)) varies proportionally with \(P_{O_2}\), and that the oxygen content of blood is given by \(C_{O_2}=1.34\,\text{Hb}\times S_{aO_2}\) (where Hb is the haemoglobin concentration in g L\(^{-1}\) and the factor 1.34 mL O\(_2\) g\(^{-1}\) Hb), determine the percentage increase in haemoglobin concentration required to keep the arterial oxygen content unchanged at altitude. Give your answer to one decimal place.
