Gce Model Questions Vol1 2023 Chemistry Question 34
Practice objective / multiple choice question 34 from the 2023 Gce Model Questions Vol1 Chemistry examination.
A lake is in equilibrium with atmospheric CO₂ at 400 ppm. At 25 °C the Henry's law constant for CO₂ is \(k_H = 3.3\times10^{-2}\,\text{mol·L}^{-1}\text{atm}^{-1}\). The first dissociation constant of carbonic acid is \(K_{a1}=4.3\times10^{-7}\). (a) Assuming only the first dissociation is important, calculate the pH of the lake water. (b) If 0.10 mol of NaHCO₃ is added to each litre of the lake water, estimate the new pH, assuming the CO₂ concentration remains unchanged.
