Gce Model Questions Vol1 2022 Biology Question 35
Practice objective / multiple choice question 35 from the 2022 Gce Model Questions Vol1 Biology examination.
The rate of diffusion of a gas across the alveolar membrane is proportional to the membrane surface area \(A\) and the concentration difference \(\Delta C\), and inversely proportional to the membrane thickness \(d\) (i.e. \(R \propto \dfrac{A\Delta C}{d}\)). Under resting conditions the values are \(A = 0.5\ \text{cm}^{2}\), \(d = 0.10\ \text{cm}\), \(\Delta C = 0.20\ \text{mol cm}^{-3}\) and the diffusion rate is \(1.0\ \text{ml min}^{-1}\). During intense exercise the surface area increases by 20 %, the thickness decreases by 10 % and the concentration difference doubles. What is the new diffusion rate (in ml min\(^{-1}\))? Give your answer to two decimal places.
