A farmer intends to grow wheat on 5 ha. Without fertilizer the expected yield is 2.5 t ha⁻¹. Applying nitrogen fertilizer (N, in kg ha⁻¹) increases yield according to \[\Delta Y = 0.4N - 0.001N^{2}\ \text{(t ha}^{-1})\], but the total yield cannot exceed 5 t ha⁻¹. Nitrogen costs \$0.80 kg⁻¹ and wheat sells for \$200 t⁻¹. Ignoring all other costs, determine (a) the amount of nitrogen (kg ha⁻¹) that maximises profit, and (b) the maximum total profit for the whole 5 ha farm. Give N to one decimal place and profit to the nearest dollar.
