Gce Model Questions Vol1 2021 Chemistry Question 50
Practice objective / multiple choice question 50 from the 2021 Gce Model Questions Vol1 Chemistry examination.
A mixture contains 10.0 g of 2‑butanol (\(\mathrm{C_4H_{10}O}\), M = 74.12 g mol⁻¹) and 8.0 g of acetic acid (\(\mathrm{CH_3COOH}\), M = 60.05 g mol⁻¹). The mixture is heated with excess concentrated \(\mathrm{H_2SO_4}\). First, 60 % of the 2‑butanol undergoes acid‑catalysed dehydration to give but‑2‑ene. Of the but‑2‑ene formed, 70 % reacts with acetic acid to give but‑2‑yl acetate (\(\mathrm{C_6H_{12}O_2}\), M = 112.16 g mol⁻¹) in a 1:1 addition reaction; the remaining but‑2‑ene is recovered unchanged. Assuming acetic acid is present in excess for the addition step, calculate the mass of but‑2‑yl acetate produced (to three significant figures).
