Gce Model Questions Vol1 2021 Chemistry Question 47
Practice objective / multiple choice question 47 from the 2021 Gce Model Questions Vol1 Chemistry examination.
A 10.0 g sample of ore contains 10.0 g of copper(II) oxide (\(\mathrm{CuO}\)) and 2.0 g of iron(III) oxide (\(\mathrm{Fe_2O_3}\)). The ore is reduced with excess carbon at 900 °C according to \(\mathrm{CuO + C \rightarrow Cu + CO}\) and \(\mathrm{Fe_2O_3 + 3C \rightarrow 2Fe + 3CO}\). The metallic copper obtained is then dissolved in excess aqueous nitric acid, giving the reaction \(3\,\mathrm{Cu} + 8\,\mathrm{HNO_3} \rightarrow 3\,\mathrm{Cu(NO_3)_2} + 2\,\mathrm{NO} + 4\,\mathrm{H_2O}\). The nitrogen monoxide gas is collected over water at 25 °C and a total pressure of 750 mm Hg; the vapour pressure of water at this temperature is 23.8 mm Hg. Calculate the volume of \(\mathrm{NO}\) gas collected (to two decimal places).
