Gce Model Questions Vol1 2019 Chemistry Question 28
Practice objective / multiple choice question 28 from the 2019 Gce Model Questions Vol1 Chemistry examination.
Consider the reaction \(2\,\text{Al} + 3\,\text{Cl}_{2} \rightarrow 2\,\text{AlCl}_{3}\). (a) If 5.0 g of aluminium is reacted with excess chlorine gas at 298 K and 1.0 atm, calculate the theoretical mass of AlCl₃ that could be formed. (b) The actual mass of AlCl₃ obtained is 9.0 g. Determine the percent yield. (c) Suppose that 10 % of the chlorine gas present reacts with an impurity according to \(2\,\text{Cl}_{2} + \text{O}_{2} \rightarrow 2\,\text{Cl}_{2}\text{O}\), thereby reducing the amount of Cl₂ available for the main reaction. Assuming the initial amount of Cl₂ was exactly the stoichiometric amount required for complete reaction of the aluminium, calculate the revised theoretical mass of AlCl₃.
