Gce Model Questions Vol1 2018 Geography Question 23
Practice objective / multiple choice question 23 from the 2018 Gce Model Questions Vol1 Geography examination.
A farmer has 12 ha of land that can be planted with wheat or legumes. Wheat yields \(3.5\) t ha\(^{-1}\) and requires \(120\) kg of nitrogen per ha; legumes yield \(2.0\) t ha\(^{-1}\) and require \(30\) kg of nitrogen per ha (the rest is fixed from the atmosphere). Synthetic nitrogen costs \(\$0.80\) per kg. Market prices are \(\$250\) per tonne of wheat and \(\$300\) per tonne of legumes. The farmer has a budget of \(\$800\) for nitrogen fertilizer and must spend the whole budget. Determine the area (to one decimal place) to allocate to wheat and to legumes that maximises profit, and give the maximum profit (to the nearest dollar).
