Gce Model Questions Vol1 2018 Chemistry Question 34
Practice objective / multiple choice question 34 from the 2018 Gce Model Questions Vol1 Chemistry examination.
A hydrocarbon \(C_{x}H_{y}\) is completely combusted. From 2.00 g of the hydrocarbon, 5.56 g of \(\text{CO}_{2}\) and 2.24 g of \(\text{H}_{2}\text{O}\) are obtained. The molar mass of the hydrocarbon is 58 g·mol⁻¹. (a) Determine its molecular formula. (b) Using average bond enthalpies (C-C 348 kJ·mol⁻¹, C-H 413 kJ·mol⁻¹, C=O 799 kJ·mol⁻¹, O-H 463 kJ·mol⁻¹, O=O 498 kJ·mol⁻¹) estimate the standard enthalpy change of combustion per mole of the hydrocarbon. Assume the hydrocarbon is cyclobutane (four C-C bonds and eight C-H bonds) and the combustion reaction is \(C_{4}H_{8} + 6\text{O}_{2} \rightarrow 4\text{CO}_{2} + 4\text{H}_{2}\text{O}\).
