Gce Model Questions Vol1 2018 Chemistry Question 30
Practice objective / multiple choice question 30 from the 2018 Gce Model Questions Vol1 Chemistry examination.
At 25 °C the solubility of SO₂ in water is described by Henry's constant \(H_{SO2}=1.23\ \text{mol L}^{-1}\text{atm}^{-1}\) and that of NO₂ by \(H_{NO2}=4.5\times10^{-2}\ \text{mol L}^{-1}\text{atm}^{-1}\). The atmospheric partial pressures are \(p_{SO2}=2.0\times10^{-5}\ \text{atm}\) and \(p_{NO2}=1.0\times10^{-5}\ \text{atm}\). Dissolved SO₂ forms H₂SO₃ (\(K_{a1}=1.2\times10^{-2}\), \(K_{a2}=6.2\times10^{-8}\)) and dissolved NO₂ forms the strong acid HNO₃. Assuming complete conversion to these acids and neglecting activity effects, calculate the pH of the resulting solution.
