Gce Model Questions Vol1 2017 Geography Question 33
Practice objective / multiple choice question 33 from the 2017 Gce Model Questions Vol1 Geography examination.
A river consists of two consecutive reaches. Reach 1 is \(70\) km long, has a slope of \(0.0015\) and Manning's roughness \(n=0.030\). Reach 2 is \(50\) km long, slope \(0.0008\) and \(n=0.035\). The channel is rectangular, 30 m wide and of constant depth \(d\) (depth \(\ll\) width, so hydraulic radius \(R\approx d\)). Using Manning's equation, determine the minimum depth (in metres, to two decimal places) that will give an overall average velocity of at least \(1.2\) m s\(^{-1}\) for the whole 120 km river.
