Gce Model Questions Vol1 2017 Geography Question 16
Practice objective / multiple choice question 16 from the 2017 Gce Model Questions Vol1 Geography examination.
Two adjacent plateaus were formed from the uplift of a former plain that lay at \(300\ \text{m}\) above sea level. After uplift, both plateaus experienced erosion at constant rates: Plateau A erodes at \(0.2\ \text{mm\ yr}^{-1}\) and Plateau B at \(0.35\ \text{mm\ yr}^{-1}\). The present surface elevations are \(1200\ \text{m}\) for Plateau A and \(950\ \text{m}\) for Plateau B. Assuming the uplift occurred at the same time for both plateaus and that erosion has acted continuously since then, calculate (a) the time elapsed since uplift (in years, to the nearest thousand) and (b) the amount of uplift (in metres, to the nearest metre).
