Gce Model Questions Vol1 2017 Biology Question 15
Practice objective / multiple choice question 15 from the 2017 Gce Model Questions Vol1 Biology examination.
A bacterial culture contains \(2\times10^{7}\) cells mL\(^{-1}\). Bacteriophage is added at a multiplicity of infection (MOI) of 0.05, resulting in adsorption of \(1\times10^{6}\) phage particles mL\(^{-1}\) and infection of the same number of bacteria (one phage per infected cell). After the latent period and subsequent rise period, the phage titre rises to \(4\times10^{8}\) PFU mL\(^{-1}\). Assuming no new infections occur during the rise period, calculate the average burst size, i.e. the number of new virions produced per infected cell. Give your answer as the nearest whole number.
