Waec Model Questions Vol1 2024 Agricultural Science Question 37
Practice objective / multiple choice question 37 from the 2024 Waec Model Questions Vol1 Agricultural Science examination.
Freshly harvested cassava chips contain 60% moisture (wet basis). For safe storage the moisture must be reduced to 12% (wet basis). The chips are dried in a cabinet dryer whose drying rate follows first‑order kinetics: dM/dt = -k(M - Me), where M is the moisture content (wet basis), Me is the equilibrium moisture content (10% wet basis) and k = 0.05 h⁻¹. Calculate (a) the time required to reach the target moisture of 12%, and (b) the total electrical energy consumed if the dryer operates continuously at a rated power of 2.5 kW during the drying period. Give the time in hours (one decimal place) and the energy in kilowatt‑hours (nearest whole number).
