Waec Model Questions Vol1 2021 Physics Question 50
Practice objective / multiple choice question 50 from the 2021 Waec Model Questions Vol1 Physics examination.
A sealed vertical tube of cross‑sectional area \(1.0\times10^{-4}\,\text{m}^2\) contains a mercury column 0.80 m high at the bottom, above which is a water column 1.20 m high. The tube is open to the atmosphere at the top. Atmospheric pressure is 101.3 kPa. (a) Find the absolute pressure at the bottom of the mercury column. (b) If the tube is placed in an elevator accelerating upward at \(2.0\,\text{m/s}^2\), what is the new absolute pressure at the bottom? Use \(\rho_{\text{Hg}}=13,600\,\text{kg/m}^3\), \(\rho_{\text{water}}=1000\,\text{kg/m}^3\) and \(g=9.8\,\text{m/s}^2\).
