A vertical spring is attached to a fixed support. Masses are hung from the spring and the corresponding extensions are recorded. The data obtained are: Mass (kg) : 0.10 0.20 0.30 Extension (m) : 0.025 0.050 0.075 The same spring is then used in a simple harmonic motion experiment. A mass of 0.20 kg is attached and the time for 10 complete oscillations is measured as 4.5 s using a stopwatch. The experiment is to determine the spring constant k by (i) the static method and (ii) the dynamic method, and to compare the two values.

Question Parts

( a )
Calculate the spring constant k using the static method for each mass and give the average value.
( b )
Determine the spring constant k from the dynamic (oscillatory) method using the recorded period.
( c )
Calculate the percentage difference between the static and dynamic values of k and discuss one possible reason for any discrepancy.
