Question 3 NECO_MODEL_QUESTIONS_VOL1 • 2019 • PHYSICS • practical

A smooth wooden board is inclined to the horizontal and a steel ball is released from rest at the top. The length of the inclined surface is 2.00 m and the vertical height of the board is 0.50 m. The time taken for the ball to travel the entire length is recorded using a stopwatch for three trials: 1.30 s, 1.35 s and 1.32 s. The experiment is to be used to determine the acceleration of the ball down the incline and to compare it with the theoretical value g sinθ.

Question Parts

( a )
Calculate the average time taken for the ball to travel the 2.00 m length.
( b )
Using the average time, determine (i) the experimental acceleration of the ball, (ii) the theoretical acceleration (g sinθ) and (iii) the percentage error of the experimental value.
( c )
State two possible sources of error in this experiment and suggest one way to minimise each.
