A force table is set up to investigate the resultant of two non‑collinear forces. The forces are applied using calibrated spring‑balance hooks. The angles are measured with a protractor (accuracy ±0.5°).

Question Parts

( a )
Force \(F_{1}\) of magnitude 5.0 N acts at \(30^{\circ}\) above the positive x‑axis. Force \(F_{2}\) of magnitude 8.0 N acts at \(120^{\circ}\) measured anticlockwise from the positive x‑axis. Record these magnitudes and directions.
( b )
Determine the theoretical resultant force \(R\) by resolving the two forces into their rectangular components. Give the magnitude of \(R\) to two decimal places and its direction measured from the positive x‑axis.
( c )
The resultant is now measured directly with a spring balance placed along the direction found in part (b). The reading obtained is 9.2 N. Calculate the percentage difference between the measured and the theoretical magnitude.
( d )
Suggest two possible sources of error that could account for the difference obtained in part (c).
