Question 1 NECO • 2023 • PHYSICS • practical

A solid metal cylinder is to be investigated for its density using the water displacement method. The apparatus consists of a balance (accuracy ±0.1 g) and a graduated cylinder (accuracy ±0.1 mL).

Question Parts

( a )
The mass of the cylinder is measured as 250.0 g. State the mass in kilograms, showing the correct conversion.
( b )
The initial water level in the graduated cylinder is 100.0 mL and after gently immersing the cylinder the level rises to 131.9 mL. Determine the volume of the cylinder in cm\(^3\).
( c )
Using the data obtained, calculate the experimental density of the metal cylinder. Show the formula used and give the answer to three significant figures.
( d )
The standard density of the metal (given in the table) is 7.85 g cm\(^{-3}\). Calculate the percentage error of the experimental value obtained in part (c). State whether the result is an over‑estimate or under‑estimate.
