Question 2 NECO • 2020 • PHYSICS • practical

A force table is used to investigate vector addition. Two known forces are applied as follows: - Force P: magnitude 5.0 N acting 30° north of east. - Force Q: magnitude 8.0 N acting 120° measured anticlockwise from the positive x‑axis (east). The forces are applied simultaneously and the resultant force is read from the table's pointer. Answer the following:

Question Parts

( a )
Resolve each force into its horizontal (x) and vertical (y) components (in newtons, to two decimal places).
( b )
Using the components from (a), determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant force R (to two decimal places). State the direction as an angle north of east.
( c )
If the system is to be brought to equilibrium, a third force S must be applied. State the magnitude and direction (as an angle north of east) of S required for equilibrium.
