Question 4 IJMB_MODEL_QUESTIONS_VOL1 • 2023 • BIOLOGY • practical

A closed respirometer was used to measure the rate of aerobic respiration of a suspension of baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) at three different temperatures. The volume of oxygen evolved was recorded over a fixed period of 5 min as shown in the table below. | Temperature (°C) | O₂ evolved in 5 min (mL) | |------------------|--------------------------| | 20 | 12.0 | | 30 | 18.5 | | 40 | 28.0 | Assume the gas is collected at 25 °C and 1 atm and that the volume recorded is directly proportional to the amount of O₂ produced.

Question Parts

( a )
Calculate the rate of oxygen evolution (mL O₂ min⁻¹) at each temperature.
( b )
Using the rates obtained, calculate the temperature coefficient Q₁₀ for the interval 20 °C–30 °C and for 30 °C–40 °C. Use Q₁₀ = (R₂/R₁)^{10/(T₂‑T₁)}.
