A helical spring is suspended vertically from a fixed support. Masses are added to the lower hook and the extension of the spring is recorded each time. The data obtained are: Mass (kg) : 0.10 0.20 0.30 0.40 Extension (cm) : 2.5 5.0 7.5 10.0 After the static measurements, a 0.50 kg mass is attached to the same spring and the system is set into simple harmonic motion. The time for 10 complete oscillations is measured as 6.28 s.

Question Parts

( a )
Determine the spring constant k from the static extension data using Hooke’s law.
( b )
Using the k obtained in part (a), calculate the theoretical period of oscillation for the 0.50 kg mass. Then compare it with the observed period (average of 10 oscillations) and compute the percentage difference.
( c )
Suggest two plausible reasons for any discrepancy between the theoretical and observed periods and propose one method to minimise each error.
( d )
If the spring is required to support a load without extending more than 12 cm, determine the maximum mass that can be safely attached using the static relationship obtained in part (a).
