A hydrogen discharge tube is connected to a simple spectroscope whose scale reads 0.1° per 5 nm of wavelength. The following angles were recorded for three visible lines of the hydrogen spectrum: - Line 1: 13.12° - Line 2: 10.50° - Line 3: 9.00° Using the Balmer formula 1/λ = R (1/2² – 1/n²) where n = 3, 4 and 5 respectively, determine the Rydberg constant (R) from the experimental data.

Question Parts

( a )
Convert each measured angle into the corresponding wavelength in nanometres.
( b )
For each wavelength calculate the value of the Rydberg constant using the Balmer relation. (Take n = 3 for line 1, n = 4 for line 2 and n = 5 for line 3.)
( c )
Calculate the average value of R from the three determinations.
( d )
Comment on the accuracy of the experimental Rydberg constant by comparing it with the accepted value 1.097×10⁷ m⁻¹.
