Question 7 IGCSE_MODEL_QUESTIONS_VOL1 • 2023 • PHYSICS • essay

A sealed cylindrical container of internal cross‑sectional area 0.020 m² contains air at a temperature of 300 K and a pressure of 1.00 × 10⁵ Pa. The container is placed vertically in a deep well filled with water of density 1000 kg m⁻³. The top of the container is level with the water surface. The container is connected to a piston that can move without friction and the piston area is the same as the container cross‑section.

Question Parts

( a )
Calculate the absolute pressure of the air inside the container when the piston is pushed down until it is 5.0 m below the water surface. State any assumptions you make.
( b )
Using the result from part (a), determine the force exerted by the water on the piston at that depth.
( c )
If the piston is now released and allowed to rise back to the water surface, explain qualitatively how the temperature of the trapped air will change and why.
( d )
Briefly describe how the principle demonstrated in this set‑up is applied in a hydraulic lift to raise a heavy load.
