Topic: Atomic Structure
Question 1 IGCSE_MODEL_QUESTIONS_VOL1 • 2023 • CHEMISTRY • practical

You are given a solid piece of an unknown metal. Using a balance and a graduated cylinder, you determine its mass and its volume by water displacement. Mass of the metal = 2.00 g (to 3 s.f.) Initial water level in the cylinder = 25.00 mL Final water level after immersion = 26.20 mL

Question Parts

( a )
Calculate the density of the metal in g·cm⁻³. Show all steps.
( b )
Using the density you have obtained, identify the metal by comparing with the following known densities (to 2 d.p.): Magnesium – 1.74 g·cm⁻³ Aluminium – 2.70 g·cm⁻³ Lithium – 0.53 g·cm⁻³ Zinc – 7.14 g·cm⁻³ State the name and chemical symbol of the metal.
( c )
For the metal you have identified, use the periodic table values: atomic number = 12, relative atomic mass = 24.31 u. (i) Write the number of protons, neutrons and electrons in a neutral atom of this metal. (ii) Calculate the total number of neutrons present in the 2.00 g sample. Express your answer in scientific notation to two significant figures.
