A battery of emf \(12\,\text{V}\) has an internal resistance \(r\). It is connected to an external circuit consisting of a resistor \(R_1 = 4\,\Omega\) in series with the parallel combination of \(R_2 = 6\,\Omega\) and \(R_3 = 8\,\Omega\). When the circuit is assembled, the terminal voltage across the external circuit is measured to be \(10\,\text{V}\).\ (a) Determine the internal resistance \(r\) of the battery (in ohms).\ (b) Keeping \(R_2\) and \(R_3\) unchanged, find the value of \(R_1\) that will maximise the power dissipated in \(R_1\). Give the optimum \(R_1\) (in ohms) and the corresponding maximum power (in watts).

Answer Options

Correct Answer A. r = 1.5 Ω; R1_opt = 5.0 Ω; P_max = 7.3 W
B. r = 2.0 Ω; R1_opt = 4.0 Ω; P_max = 6.5 W
C. r = 1.8 Ω; R1_opt = 5.5 Ω; P_max = 7.0 W
D. r = 1.0 Ω; R1_opt = 6.0 Ω; P_max = 8.0 W
Correct Answer
A
Correct Option:
r = 1.5 Ω; R1_opt = 5.0 Ω; P_max = 7.3 W
