A wooden block of mass 0.80 kg is placed on a rough wooden incline that can be set at different angles. The block is held stationary by a spring balance attached to the block and pulling up the plane. For each angle the tension T shown on the balance is recorded when the block is just about to move up at constant speed. The distance the block moves while the balance is reading is 0.50 m. The data obtained are:

Question Parts

( a )
For each angle (20°, 25°, 30°) calculate the coefficient of kinetic friction μ_k using the equilibrium condition T + μ_k mg cosθ = mg sinθ. Take g = 9.8 m s⁻².
( b )
Determine the average value of μ_k from the three measurements and state it to two significant figures.
( c )
Using the average μ_k, calculate the work done by friction when the block moves the 0.50 m distance at the 30° setting. State the sign of the work and give the answer in joules to two significant figures.
