Gce Model Questions Vol1 2018 Physics Question 42
Practice objective / multiple choice question 42 from the 2018 Gce Model Questions Vol1 Physics examination.
An electric circuit consists of a 12.0 V ideal battery, a fixed resistor of 4.0 Ω and a heating coil whose resistance at 20 °C is 2.0 Ω and increases linearly with temperature according to \(R_{\text{coil}} = 2.0\,[1+\alpha (T-20^{\circ}\text{C})]\) where \(\alpha = 4.0\times10^{-3}\,\text{°C}^{-1}\). The coil loses heat to water at a rate of 10.0 W per degree Celsius rise of the coil above the ambient temperature (20 °C). In steady state the electrical power dissipated in the coil equals the rate of heat loss. Determine (a) the current flowing in the circuit and (b) the temperature rise \(\Delta T\) of the coil above 20 °C.
