Gce Model Questions Vol1 2018 Further Mathematics Question 48
Practice objective / multiple choice question 48 from the 2018 Gce Model Questions Vol1 Further Mathematics examination.
A uniform horizontal beam \(AB\) of length \(6\text{ m}\) is hinged at \(A\) to a vertical wall. The beam is supported by a cable attached at \(B\) and anchored to a point \(C\) on the wall directly above \(A\); the cable makes an angle of \(30^{\circ}\) with the horizontal. The beam carries a downward load of \(800\text{ N}\) at a point \(D\) located \(2\text{ m}\) from \(A\), and its own weight is \(300\text{ N}\) acting at its centre. Determine (i) the tension in the cable, (ii) the horizontal and vertical components of the reaction at \(A\), and (iii) the magnitude of the resultant reaction at \(A\). Give all answers to three significant figures.
