Question 40 GCE_MODEL_QUESTIONS_VOL1 • 2017 • PHYSICS • objective

A sealed rigid container initially contains dry air at a pressure of \(150\ \text{kPa}\) and a temperature of \(20^{\circ}\text{C}\). Its volume is \(5.0\ \text{L}\). The container is then heated to \(80^{\circ}\text{C}\) and allowed to expand freely until its volume becomes \(6.0\ \text{L}\). (a) Assuming ideal‑gas behaviour, calculate the final absolute pressure of the air in the container. (b) The container is subsequently opened to the atmosphere (\(101.3\ \text{kPa}\)) while remaining at \(80^{\circ}\text{C}\). How many grams of air escape from the container? (Molar mass of air = \(28.97\ \text{g·mol}^{-1}\)). Give the final pressure to one decimal place and the mass escaped to two significant figures.

Answer Options

Correct Answer A. Final pressure = 150.6 kPa; Mass escaped = 2.9 g
B. Final pressure = 149.8 kPa; Mass escaped = 3.1 g
C. Final pressure = 155.0 kPa; Mass escaped = 2.5 g
D. Final pressure = 145.2 kPa; Mass escaped = 3.4 g
Correct Answer
A
Correct Option:
Final pressure = 150.6 kPa; Mass escaped = 2.9 g
